They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This old cliché is certainly true of preventative dentistry. Taking care of your teeth will ensure a bright and beautiful smile for years to come, and it will also help avoid additional health concerns that conditions related to your teeth can cause. It is important to start early by sharing with your children how to care for their teeth including brushing and flossing, but also to set a great example for them by practicing preventative dental care yourself. Preventing tooth decay and other concerns, however, requires more than being diligent at home. Regular exams and professional cleanings (prophys) are critical to reducing the likelihood of issues, and to correct any issues that do arise early before they become major concerns. At East Ridge Dental, our experienced and caring team provides a broad range of preventative dental services for the entire family. Below is a list of some of our most common preventative services.

New Patient Exam

We believe that in order to serve our new patients in the best possible way, we need a full understanding of your mouth. Every new patient we see will receive a thorough full mouth exam, x-rays, periodontal charting, and an oral cancer screening. Your records remain on file to assist us in all future visits as well. Whether your last dental visit was just a few months ago, or it has been decades, this initial exam is designed to find out what your dental needs are, and how we can provide the highest level of care.

Cleanings/Prophylactic Treatment

The American Dental Association recommends preventative care treatment (prophys) should be done at least every six months, and in cases of periodontal disease every three months. Dental prophylaxis (prophys) is the use of dental tools to scale and polish your teeth to remove tartar, plaque, and stains. The process also will smooth your teeth eliminating rough spots that may collect bacteria. Twice yearly exams and cleanings (preventative care visits) are the best way to prevent tooth decay. We offer regular cleanings (prophys), deep cleanings (gingival therapy), and treatment for periodontal disease (scaling and root planing) depending on your needs.

Children’s Exam & Cleanings

We are proud to be a family dental clinic and serve every member of the family. Because we love families and are dedicated to everyone’s oral health, we welcome children aged two years and older for preventative care. Our services for children include a full mouth exam, x-rays (when permitted by the child) and cleaning. Our hope is that we can show children that visiting the dentist is not scary, and encourage them to practice good dental hygiene. Our promise is that we will do all we can to ensure your child is as comfortable as possible. Kids can also look forward to their own goodie bag to take home with them when their exam and cleaning is complete.

Sealants are most commonly used on the permanent teeth of children, as they are more prone to having cavities. However, sealants can also be effective in the prevention of decay on adult teeth.  Many adults who are at high risk for developing caries (cavities) due to chronic dry mouth (a very common side effect of numerous medications), are good candidates for sealants. Sealants consist of a transparent coating that is applied to the biting surface of the back teeth. This coating helps to protect the tooth from bacteria and plaque that lead to tooth and gum decay.

Athletic Mouth-Guards

East Ridge Dental believes that physical health is just as important as dental health. We also believe that the two go hand-in-hand. However, athletic events offer a prime opportunity for dental trauma. Athletic mouth guards are custom fit appliances for your teeth to prevent injury from occurring. Because they are custom fit, they are vastly more comfortable and less obtrusive than generic mouth guards are.

Night Guards

Much of the damage caused to our teeth can occur when we are not even aware it is happening. When we sleep, clenching and grinding can cause significant dental issues, as well as issues with your health. Jaw disorders including TMJ disorders can appear. Chipped teeth and other concerns are also common. Also, these issues can affect our much-needed rest and lead to other health issues. Night guards are a custom fit clear appliance that prevents grinding during sleep, reduces damage, and ensures a good night’s sleep.
